For 8th grade parents and students the math comp test will be on Dec. 9 from 9:20-10:50.  Students are working on reviewing their math skills for the last week and need to continue to work on it on their own until the test date. 8th grade worked with their little buddies last week to put together a short recording about the components of bullying and a possible solution. It is always great to have them work with their little buddies as they begin to develop their skills at working with and teaching these younger students. They rise to the occasion and do some amazing things with these kids. Well done 8th graders!

7th grade is finishing up their work on algebra and has a take home test that is due Nov. 29. We are also working on designing a science project with the tank and crabs. Lots of ideas and questions have come out of that work.

6th grade is moving into a study of the periodic table and are trying to figure out what elements, compounds and mixtures are.

Wishing you all a festive Thanksgiving this week.

Report cards are on their way home tonight. The 1st term has come to it's formal conclusion and we are looking the holiday season in the face. Wow where did it all go? June will be here in no time at this rate.

8th grade met with little buddies this afternoon to begin work on a presentation for the monthly community meeting on Friday afternoon. We have lots to accomplish and today's start was amazing as the groups of big and little buddies created scripts for their short audio presentations. They were introduced to the ideas and then had about 30 mins to meet, brainstorm and get something down on paper so that on Wednesday they will be ready for their recording sessions. They always amaze me when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Some great basketball games tonight as the boys and girls both won their games against Bristol. Well done teams!

8th grade is also working on their math comp work and should have the practice test with them to look over a find the question that they need to review this week. I do not have a final date for the test but will let all know as soon as I get that information.

There is a planetarium activity that the school will be experiencing on Thursday in their grade clusters. Should be a good outside resource that will spark a few questions and ideas. Also on that day we are getting Thanksgiving boxes together so get any food that you have to contribute in before then.  Thank you in advance.

Wednesday was the AVS Veterans Day gathering. It is days like that, that make one feel so much better with the world. Thanks to all who attended and to those who worked to put it together.

We of course gather to give thanks to the veterans on this day and they are always so willing, understanding, and seemingly happy to share the day with us. A huge thanks to them and their sharing with us on this day. This year we did have a few changes in the routine that some of us were nervous about but as the day ended we were pleased with how the changes worked. Much of these changes were brought to us by Chris Moody, so a big thanks to him for the insight, ideas, and sharing of the tricks of the trade. It is great to have an experienced teacher giving us ideas and feedback about the event.

For me the greatest thing about the day was our students, (but I'm biased) we don't always have these types of days but this was a memorable one. They rose to the occasion in the prep work, the interviews, the introductions, the panel discussion, the set-up, the music, the lunch serving and the putting things away. It was a complete package and it was great to reflect on their role in making the day happen. It was for them and with out them it could not have happened. It was real, they knew it. Those vets sitting in front of them had stories, dreams, and advice to share and our students where there to soak it in, reflect and thank those who have served our country. They did it with poise and reverence that gets their teacher emotional at times.  So thanks to the students for making it such a special day.

This coming week we have basketball games on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Home games are Monday and Friday so there will be plenty of excitement around that this week. Report cards should be coming home on Monday. We are also getting the Thanksgiving food baskets put together this week so check with your student to see what you can add to the food collection. Thank you.

This morning we were treated to a marvelous presentation of Beuty and the Beast by the Heartwood Theater group.  It was great to have them, their energy and expertise back in the building to share with us. After the play 2-5th graders had morning workshops with members of the cast that taught skills of the stage.

The AVS basketball teams have just headed out for their game on Islesboro. Fun ferry ride and game ahead for them. Good luck to our teams out there.

The term ends this Friday so keep an eye on the grades as the week ends and get any late work turned in.

Next week we have the Veterans panel on Wednesday, Nov. 10th.This will involve middle school students in an interview process and panel presentation followed by a lunch. We might be looking for some volunteers to bring in some muffins for the veterans to have with their morning coffee. This is always a great day here at AVS and I am looking forward to this tradition continuing this year.

Yearbook team is getting geared up and they are getting assistance from 7th and 8th graders who will be getting ads for the yearbook this year. Thanks to all of them and thanks to those of you who are able to take out an ad in this year's yearbook.

We are working hard during study hall as there is an away basketball game this afternoon and there is plenty for students to be working on as the term is coming to a close this Friday.

The Hunter's Breakfast was a financial success this Saturday. Thanks to all that came out and had breakfast, to those who helped get the word out and to those who did the work to get the event organized. Special thanks to Ashley and her work that morning to get the job done!

This week we have a performance from the Heartwood Theater @ 9:00am on Wednesday for the whole school. Looking forward to this performance an the work that they will do with our students later in the year.

So basketball season has it's first game this evening. Tonight the games are @ Great Salt Bay. The first home games will be next Monday against Hope.

Today 8th grade did have to do more "equations" which is difficult for those that feel there should be no equations in math. 8th grade is also finishing up their podcasts. Their final  versions are due Wednesday.

7th grade had a good day on Wall Street today. One team sold and bought  shares and another one felt that their investments were fine and they bought other shares. 7th also worked on explaining why fungi is more closely related to animals than plants. Who would have guessed?

6th grade looked at the size of a cell, a molecule and an atom. Great work today as we straightened out some misconceptions around these three items. Heading toward the periodic table!

Enjoy what is left of the candy.
