Sorry no day 9 report last night. I was under the weather so here goes day 10.

Getting ready for the Open House this evening. Yesterday we did NWEA tests with 7th and 8th grade. There are two more tests this week, on Thursday and Friday. Any make up tests will be scheduled for next week. We then have a week off and then we have to think about the State tests that we need to complete in October.

We have the tank up and running and now we have a few critters hanging out in there. Kristen brought in some lobsters and crabs. Thanks for the crustacean delivery! David Burr has taken a tank repair project home with him this afternoon to see about fixing the outflow pipe. I'm sure that he can work his magic on that plastic pipe.

8th grade met today to talk about fund raisers that they had in mind and dance dates and themes. Good meeting. Used a lot of what they had learned from their time at Kieve to work together during the meeting time. And while I am on the Kieve news they have come back to AVS with such positive attitudes and spoke very highly of their time there last week. Hats off to them!

7th grade has been working on their math, looking at linear relationships, intervals and graphing them. Has been a productive week. No science yet this week. Just tank talk which has been excellent. All seem excited about getting it up and running.

Two weeks already. Wow!
I trust that the 8th graders are headed home as I write this and that parents and students alike have had a good final day at Kieve. I can't wait to hear the stories on Monday.  Remember on Monday we will be doing NWEA tests with 7th and 8th grades. Check the calendar for the other NWEA testing times.

Today we have had a productive day with math lessons around data and what does it mean. The lesson is centered around a few college students planning a bike trip business, offering five day trips from Philadelphia to Williamsburg. After math we then started setting up the saltwater tank. We began by creating a space in the room for the tank. Then  began loading in the 80 gallons of water. We next added rocks to the tank for effect and house building for the new inhabitants next week. Finally we added salt. And then more salt and then more salt, I am still adding salt. Hope that I have enough and I hope that you can make it in Tuesday night to check it out in person!

Working with the 7th grade today was a great experience as they knew what I was expecting and they delivered on the focused, responsible work that needed to be done.  Thanks!

The compost buckets were delivered to classrooms today so that will be getting started next week. 8th grade will need to get out in the garden soon to begin the harvest.  Also 8th grade parents you might be thinking about fundraising. There is a thread on the forum that might become a place where we can do fundraising communication.

Glad to see that some of us have temped the waters with the forum. Give it a try!      Today I have a note from Mr. Todd about the up coming soccer schedule. For those of you who where wondering here it is!

As we kick off our Busline League soccer season here at AVS, we are still finalizing our game schedule. I will pass it out to players and families as soon as I can (hopefully, on Monday).    On Monday, September 13, we will travel to Lincolnville Central School for our first game. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:45 and the bus will be returning around 5:30. I will be passing out uniforms on Friday, September 10, to students in grades 6 and 7. Students in grade 8 will be getting their uniforms on Monday.     In order to participate in the game on Monday, students must have proof of insurance and a current physical on file in the office. Also, students must be equipped with a mouth guard and shin guards in order to play. Go Wildcats!

Well after awaking to the sound of rain this morning, putting the students on the bus and teaching a few class I headed down to Kieve to a marvelous day and a group of smiling, active and engaged kids. It was great to see them, share stories from the morning and the lunch menu. We have had our taste of corn dogs!
I sat in on a few of their classes and was impressed with the level of student involvement and teacher delivery of the lesson. Kieve provides many ways for students to both involve and challenge themselves throughout the day. Makes for a rewarding time for this class of future classmates.

7th grade did some work on the laptops and were assigned a Current Science reading task which is due on Friday. in math we were continuing with the graphing work that we did yesterday. No math homework tonight.

6th grade I have not seen for a week so look forward to meeting with them tomorrow.

So today I was doing my civic duty at the courthouse in Rockland as a member of the August/September jury panel. This was a first for me. It is an interesting experience which I am glad to have completed and it is even sweeter in the fact that I was not chosen for any of the trials this session. I have spent two days this summer with this duty, sitting, observing and learning about how the judicial system operates at this level. Very interesting!

With that duty now behind me I am off to Kieve with the 8th graders tomorrow. Looking forward to see how they work into their responsibilities there. Usually a great experience for all. Will try to get some pictures when I am there.

Thanks to Melaine Bragg for subbing in my room today. Alway good to have a familiar face in the room.

Trust all had a good Labor Day weekend and I see that soccer was getting underway this afternoon after school. Great to have a team getting ready for their season.

So there we have week one down. What an adventure that was. I am trusting that after the long weekend of rain and wind from Hurricane Earl that we will be in better atmospheric conditions to get back in the classroom. As I sit here tonight that temp is still hot and I to think that those students hung in there for 3-4 days of mid nineties in my classroom. Hats of to them!

Hoping to get the saltwater tank up and running soon and trying to get some collaborative climatic data collection with seven other schools in the state.  Could be an adventure in the making. Also hoping that Partners for Enrichment can help get us on track with a boat for the educational passages program.

Hope that you all have a safe yet adventurous weekend and we will do it all again next week.

That was a first for me. I remember hearing stories from teachers about heat shutting down school but here in Maine? Unheard of! Or maybe not. Do you remember having school shut down due to heat? (Let us know with a comment) Because the Welcome Back evening has been postpone we will need to find a time when all can sign up for conferences in October.

I am trying to get parents emails organized so that the majority of us can have access to this site. Hope to get that done this week.  Reminder to 8th grade parents that there are some Kieve forms coming home for your review and signatures. Thanks for getting those back to me as soon as possible.

Today 8th had a Q&A session about Kieve. Good questions and lots of excitement with this group. Very encouraging.

7th had a thrilling time with the Jumping Jacks. Ask them about their crazy teacher that has them do jumping jacks on a day like today!  Great time. Will review student's results tomorrow, assuming things cool down.

Stay tuned to your radio and phone as to our dismissal time tomorrow. If warm again they may have early release again.

Laptops will be coming either tomorrow or early next week if this heat shortens the week. Also if you or others in your family are readers this site might be of interest to you. It is a place where you can share your reading list with others, recommendations and new reading ideas. I have used Shelfari for a few years now and have enjoyed the connections and insights that it can provide when one is looking for a new book.

Okay,

That was another hot day in the 8th Grade room. I need to work on a redesign of the room to get the breeze in and the sun out. 6th grade and I did a quick experiment at the end of the day and found that we could make it hotter by closing the windows even though the curtains keep the sun out.

Home work: 8th Math - Finish Problem 1.1
6th Science - Finish the Science survey

Tomorrow in 7th math we will begin the jumping jacks. Hope that it is cooler than it was today.  8th grade will be working on their linear relationships from the experiment homework.  Also 8th grade will be getting some Kieve paperwork with packing info, timing info and a permission slip for the bus ride. Here is a link to the Kieve Leadership School. It has some links to information that might help you as you plan for next weeks adventure.

Cool off tonight,

Mr. Porter

What a great day. 8th grade came in and had a fun re-entry to the school routine. Stories, sharing and updates from me. Fund raising thoughts and questions were on the for front of most students minds. The other thing is the Kieve experience that they seem to be looking forward to. That social connection with their freshman class is always a strong one. Some talk of dances and fund-raising later in the day after our intro to math.

7th grade then entered and with the addition of a few new students we got through the usual first day stuff and then got into some math lesson. Nothing like getting started on day one.

6th grade started with intro and then got some observations started. Great group with lots of ideas and insights and ideas. The temp during this class was approaching 95° so credit to them fro hanging in there.

A full day for me but it was great to be back with the students.

Just a note to you about the impending beginning of school on Monday. Sounds like it could be a hot one! What happened to starting after Labor Day?

For parents there are a few links on the tabs above for you to explore when you have a moment. What will be needed for class this year, expectations, calendar, contact information, and a forum for you, your child and me to connect around issues that concern us all.

For students there are all of the above options as well. Just  a heads up the schedule will be much different this year so get ready for "new".

Wednesday night Sept. 1st will be a welcome back night at AVS. All encouraged to attend. There will be garden visits, ropes course tours, classroom visits and parent teacher conferences sign-ups. Oh yes, there is talk of some spaghetti around 6:00pm.

8th grade students will be heading off to Kieve on Wednesday, Sept. 8th for three days.

Looking forward to getting together on Monday.
